Handy Stitch by Singer is a small handheld portable sewing machine. Designed for quick repairs made right where the project is, the Handy Stitch can be carried right to the fabric needing work, like a set of curtains with a torn hem or pants in need of a fast hem while traveling. Battery powered and lightweight, the Handy Stitch is a simple design made for basic stitching and projects. Open the battery holder compartment and install the batteries. Replace a needle on the Handy Stitch if necessary, always using a Singer 1111 needle or DHx1 size 14 needle. Loosen the set screw with a small screwdriver and take out the old needle. I don't have a clue about sewing machines, never used one but I don't think the thread is supposed to pull out after the stitch is done!

Lift the presser foot gently by hand and place the fabric underneath. Don't push down on the needle arm. The presser foot has a spring tension to press the fabric down and hold it in place while sewing. Hold the Handy Stitch with your right hand, placing your thumb over the power switch on the top to operate. Use your left hand to guide the fabric, and use the power button to activate the needle to begin sewing.

The stitch is a chain stitch and does pull out from the end of the stitching unless the thread is pulled to the back of the fabric. I intend to use this machine for repairs on materials that are too bulky to get into a regular machine.

Snip and trim both tails of thread on either side of the seam.

March 6, 2012 0 found this helpful The reviews on this little stitcher aren't very good, and most of those unfavourable reviews mention that the instructions are so worthless they had to Google around to find this helpful 'eHow' page: I got my son a mini-sewing machine (not the Handy Stitch, he has something that looks like a toy mini sewing machine) at CVS last spring, he's learned how to sew using it for small mending jobs and he's moving up to a basic Singer now because he's fallen in love with sewing, lol. One of his friends has the Singer Handy Stitch, and says it works OK, but sewing by hand is faster and more reliable, and that having a 'real' machine like the mini my son has would be a lot less hassle.
